Extreme sports – what to wear

When you take part in extreme sports, it’s not just about getting yourself psyched up, it’s about dressing right. While this is inevitably down to vanity in many ways, a good outdoor clothing brand will make sure the adventure clothing they sell is stylish, warm, durable and strong enough to protect you from minor abrasions if you happen to fall off your mountain bike or take a small tumble in a rocky area.

Only helmets, knee and elbow pads and the correct gloves and shoes will protect you against more serious incidents but a good jacket, hoody or pair of trousers really will save your skin from any knocks or scrapes. So what clothing is most appropriate for what outdoor pursuits and extreme sports? If you’re new to rock climbing or mountain biking or just a gentle bit of hiking, going to a reputable outdoor clothing store should be the first stop. These are no longer huge warehouses full of pink Gor-Tex and rows and rows of ugly and un-wearable shoes, boots, waterproofs and jackets, instead they’re high street shops with the same branding, design and merchandising as a fashion store.

The merger between fashion and outdoor and adventure clothing can only be a good thing, after all, if you’re into the great outdoors chances are you’ll be spending a lot of your time there so it would be nice to enjoy wearing the type of clothing that you spend the most time in. It’s like work clothing for those who are office based, instead of thinking of them as work clothes and wearing the same white shirt and black trousers every day, it should be a chance to show off your individuality and style, after all, the happiest and best dressed people are those who see every day as an occasion.

Hoodies and t-shirts now come in an almost unending array of colours, patterns, designs, shapes and sizes with long sleeves, short sleeves, cropped design, layered and contrasting necklines, drawstrings, stitching and linings so there’s absolutely no excuse for looking dowdy, boring or dorky even if you’re going to scale a rock face.

Travel clothing, like adventure clothing is a lot about comfort, warmth and layering and these are the most important things to remember when you’re out putting together the all important wardrobe. Staple investments for the ultimate outdoor clothing collections are a selection of ethical t shirts, two of three good quality, warm hoodies, a set of easily packable waterproofs that are lightweight and breathable, a couple of pairs of hardwearing but lightweight shorts, the same again but trousers and finally a drawer full of walking or skiing socks. If you have all these things and you accessorise with gloves, hat, neck-warmer and the correct footwear, you’re on your way to an awesome outdoor adventure.
